AROOOOOOOOOO!
                      WELCOME!

       My name is Mr. Fairley.
My Hoomins sometimes call me King because I think I am King of my house.

King Fairley's CrownI guess I would be too if my Hoomins didn't keep telling me SIT!  STAY!  NO!  Get out of the cabinet! Sigh. I guess it's ok because when I do what they tell me to, I get yummy treats!

I love to play 'find the sock', catch in the air, keep away, and tug o war.
Mommy says I can't play tug o war for awhile because I was getting too aggressive.
That's why she is making me sit, stay, speak or quiet before she'll give me anything, or even put on my leash!
She said something about an obedient dog is fun to be around...whatever that means.
I listen to her sometimes, sometimes I don't.  That's because we Beagles are independent thinkers.  Some hoomins say we are dumb, but we aren't! We are very smart!   We are so smart that we know when we want to ignore you and when we don't.   We hear what you are saying loud and clear, but unless you have a treat in your hand, we usually won't listen.

Fairley's treats

You see, we Beagles are very food oriented.
We have bottomless pits for stomachs.
We could eat all the time if you would let us.
Because of that, we have a tendency to get overweight.
Trust me!
D-I-E-T is a nasty four letter word to a Beagle!

TriColored Beagle

BEAGLE TIDBITS

There are 2 sizes of Beagles recognized by the AKC. 13" & 15 " measured at the withers ( that's the top of the shoulders).

Colors include: Tri-color...white, black and tan; Red & White ( like me!) ; Blue Tricolor; Chocolate and White;  Lemon & White. You may see what looks like freckles throughout the body...that's called 'ticking'.
Temperament: cheery, merry, with a glint of mischief in its eye with an outgoing personality.
Should have the loved characteristic of the soft pleading eyes.
Beagles originated in England and were brought to the US around the 1800's. The National Beagle Club was formed and held its first hunting trial in 1888.

The Beagle is ALWAYS led by his/her nose and makes an
excellent hunter.

BUSY BEAGLES are HAPPY BEAGLES

So, you've got a Beagle and he/she acts like no one ever taught em any manners?!?
That's because Beagles are independent thinkers. They can be trained...just not like a typical Lab or German Shepard.
Remember, Beags are VERY food oriented. Try the 'Praise & Reward' method. Or the 'Clicker'. Both are based on rewarding the Beag for something good he/she has done instead of focusing on the bad.(like digging a hole in the couch!)

Keep them busy by getting involved in field trials in your area.
Field Trials allow Beagles to do what it was bred to do-track and hunt small game.  Field trial competitions are judged in several catagories.
If you don't want to enter a competitive trial, create a non - competitive situation by walking your Beagle through the woods, watching it pick up the scent of a rabbit. Jolly good fun! especially when you hear them 'tongue' or the famous 'bay'.

Still need more ideas?
How about Hide & Seek?..You hide..the Beag sniffs you out.
Find it....you hide one of your Beags' toys and tell them to go 'Find It'.
Since Beagles are natural born clowns, always willing to put on a good show , Tricks (for treats!) is an excellent way for you to bond and keep that Beag busy!

10 BASICS YOUR BEAGLE SHOULD KNOW

1.  Come: The MOST important...it could save your Beagle's life.

2.  Down:How many times do you really want to tell 'Beagle' to go lie down ?

3.  Sit: Not as binding as 'down' but a great command!

4.  Stay: You knew this one was next didn't you? Another safety command...Beags should learn to stay until released. How many Beagles do you know can resist an open door?

5.  Stand: Good when you need to clip nails or give a bath.

6.  Okay/Let's Go: simple command to release Beagle from previous command or to signal an invitation.

7.  Find It: A must for the Find It game..take advantage of that nose!

8.  Bring: He finds it, then what? This command is very helpful!

9.  Leave It/Drop It: One of my favorites...great when he/she has a mouthful of smelly stuff!

10.  Quiet/Enough:Beagles are well known for their voice. They are very vocal and don't mind carrying on a conversation for quite a while. Enough is enough!
